Horn playing and everything associated with it has fas- cinated Andrew Joy since he first heard the horn at age 12.A very frustrating introduction to this most challenging of instruments at age 15, after having played all the other brass instruments for six years, triggered an intense desire in him to master the horn. The numerous challenges that came with establishing a very successful career in Germany led Joy to deep, intensive study in many areas associated with performance including body use, energy efficiency, self-talk, mental strength and toughness, energy psychology, as well as advanced practice and communication techniques. After co-designing an excellent triple horn together with Dieter Otto, Joy went of to invent the JoyKey which is an automatic water drainage system for brass/wind instruments. This in turn led him to also using another recent and brilliant innovation for brass/wind instruments, the lefreQue sound bridge. Andrew Joy’s approach to teaching is about empowering the students to access and develop as much of their potential as possible using whatever information, methods and techniques that work for each individual.
